Workplace Sexual harassment

SaferPlaces NB is a program created by the Public Legal Education and Information Service of NB that provides workplaces with information about New Brunswick laws regulating harassment, reporting procedures and legal rights available to victims of workplace sexual harassment.

We offer two different training workshops about workplace sexual harassment – a 2.5 hour workshop for employees, and a 3 hour workshop for managers and employers.

EMPLOYEE SESSION – 2.5 HOURS

  • Build understanding of what workplace sexual harassment (“WSH”) is and who tends to be the target.
  • Build understanding of individual rights and responsibilities, and that of colleagues.
  • Build capacity to make good decisions in specific situations.
  • Increase readiness to act.
  • Understand usual and vulnerable targets of workplace sexual harassment.
  • Understand other forms of harassment in the workplace.
  • Understand individual rights and responsibilities, one’s own and those of colleagues.
  • Understand informal and formal responses to workplace sexual harassment.
  • Access services and resources.
  • Describe WHS, identify usual targets and provide examples of sexual and sexualized conduct, comments, and gestures.
  • Identify other forms of harassment/violence in the workplace.
  • Understand the legal obligations of employers and the consequences of harassment.
  • Appropriately address inappropriate behaviour either as a witness or victim.
  • Identify different complaint options available to victims of WSH.

EMPLOYER/MANAGERS – 3 HRS

  • Build understanding of what workplace sexual harassment (“WSH”) is and who tends to be the target.
  • Build understanding of individual rights and responsibilities, and that of colleagues
  • Build capacity to make good decisions in specific situations.
  • Increase readiness to act.
  • Understand the usual and vulnerable targets of workplace sexual harassment.
  • Understand other forms of harassment in the workplace.
  • Understand barriers faced by targets and identify possible ways to address those barriers in their workplace.
  • Understand appropriate behaviour as leaders in their organization.
  • Understand how to address inappropriate behaviour.
  • Understand how to promote a respectful workplace.
  • Understand how to appropriately respond to complaints of workplace sexual harassment.
  • Describe WHS, identify usual targets and provide examples of sexual and sexualized conduct, comments, and gestures.
  • Identify other forms of harassment/violence in the workplace.
  • Understand the legal obligations of employers and the consequences of harassment.
  • Appropriately address inappropriate behaviour either as a witness or victim.
  • Identify different complaint options available to victims of WSH.

Listening to the Voices of Vulnerable Employees

Research findings show that women are most likely to experience sexual harassment, while other vulnerable populations such as the LGBTQ2S community are also at risk of being harassed in the workplace and elsewhere.
